Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback to be launched in Malaysia?

We all know that pretty soon Mitsubishi won’t be the only company selling the Lancer here in Malaysia – a Proton styled variant is expected to hit Proton showrooms before the end of the year. For those that still want a Mitsubishi-badged C-segment product, you probably won’t have to settle for the Lancer sedan as these pix snapped in Putrajaya by reader suggests that Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia will offer the Lancer Sportsback here soon.

The Lancer Sportsback was first introduced at the Paris 2008 show two years ago. It’s basically a Lancer with a 5-door hatchback body, and in Europe it comes with a few engines including a baseline 4A91 1.5L DOHC, a 1.8L 4B10, or even a 140 PS Volkswagen engine. A Lancer Sportback Ralliart is also available, equipped with the 4B11T engine which takes a 4B11 and turbocharges it. In the Lancer Sportback Ralliart, the engine is detuned for 240 horses and 343Nm though, lower than in the Lancer Evolution.

Look after the jump for photos by readers Adrian and Sharfox, thanks guys! :) You can also find some hi-res photo galleries from the Lancer Sportback’s original unveiling.

  • AI-generated Summary ✨

Comments are generally positive about the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback's potential launch in Malaysia, with excitement about its sporty design and features. Some comments compare it to other models like the Mazda 3 and Subaru Impreza, praising its looks and performance. There is skepticism about whether Proton will rebadge it, with some suggesting it might be a future Proton Waja Aeroback. Several commenters express hope that Mitsubishi Malaysia will price the Sportback competitively below RM140, and mention expecting a Ralliart version. Some off-topic discussions and criticisms about Proton and other local cars appear, but overall, the sentiment is anticipation and enthusiasm for this new Mitsubishi model arriving in Malaysia.

Btw, it was very heart warming to interview a local Japanese fan there, whom took a white piece of cloth, made some blue & red lines across, a yellow cressent moon & a star.. and supporting the Malaysian team competing there.

Bodoh! Mesti le Persona sebab Persona model sedan, Gen2 model Hatchback/aeroback. Gen2 dah tak laku dah. Persona terus laku. Itu semua kehendak pasaran la ngok. Ko ni buta ekonomi laa.

Nope, the chassis is definitely from the Mitsubishi Carisma. Proton only designed the external sheetmetal and the interior. Mitsubishi engines from that generation of chassis can drop right into the Waja’s engine bay. The Waja’s suspension components are interchangeable with the Carisma’s and the old Volvo S40’s because they’re all based on the same platform with similar undercarriage.

Side view is as good as Harrier 2003, yes. To be able to sell well at RM120k, the must-have goodies are: moon-roof, turbo 2.0L, auto-aircon, leather seats, telescopic steering, CVT auto, 17″ rim, V-Kool and at least 4 airbags, in order to compensate for the BRAND, resale value and smaller interior compared to Altis or Civic.

Looks ugly.. a truly sedan car with a slap on hatch, butt looks too weird.

don’t think its a ralliart version in the pic. Ralliart got twin exhaust.

C’mon Mitsu M’sia, bring in the Ralliart version … price at RM150K … give a Golf GTI owner a good run for their money …

Im pretty sure if Mitsu is bringing in the sportback, they would bring the facelifted one, cuz , prefacelift is kinda tame and unexciting at the front, , and we would know that we’re getting unsold 2008/9 models instead….(or 2nd hand)

other excitng hatchback not available in malaysia:

not serious or no intention to make the rear looks aggresive.
and the car is too big to be a sportback.

A while back(2008) proton and mitsu did have an agreement to jointly develop a small hatchback car(when they agreed to re-badge lancer as a waja). But I don’t think they would re-badging this car since it wasn’t in the agreement.

Not sure a newspaper articles from 2+/- year would do it justice, but here goes.

I think they reassessed the market, especially seeing the response of the Gen-2 & the Persona and decided instead of hatch, they’ll sell a sedan. Lo and behold, the new Waja.

Another possible prototype for P1 to clone something…………………..A.E.R.O. …………..BUTT! Strongly band Mitsubishi to launch this model to bring bek buyer confident. I have to say it is almost obsolute model recently that why many unit unable to sold in Europe and Asia therefore import to Malaysia to clear those old stock. Like Paul say, since 2008 already launched this model in other country, why until now only our market available? Must be some rubbish unsold in other country and send to here for new model. SUCK!!!

I think most of them who comments here does not really knows the real thing. And for those idiots who can’t afford the original lancer sorry for you guys since the rebadge is only going to have a 1.8litre engine. No 6speed CVT gearbox. And definately won’t be good as the CBU lancer. Poor proton and the buyers
