Paris 2010: Volkswagen Passat gets new company face

Paris 2010: Volkswagen Passat gets new company face

This is the seventh generation Passat, according to the company, although it’s most probably a heavily reworked version of the sixth gen car that’s sold in Malaysia. As expected, it receives the new VW corporate face and a new tail design as well. The men in charge, Klaus Bischoff (VW head of design) and Walter de Silva (VW Group head of design), describe the new Passat as a car with “clean surfaces and an elegant yet imposing stance”.

Every body panel apart from the roof is new, according to the company. The new grille has horizontal chrome fins and are flanked by headlights with LED running lights. At the rear, new tail lights are joined by subtle chrome highlights. Measuring 4,769 mm in length, the new Passat sedan is 4 mm longer than the car it replaces although width and height remains. Clean but dull is my first impression after seeing it in the metal.

The cabin is largely similar to the current car, so there’s nothing to shout about. I found out and tried one unique feature, though. To open the boot, kick the underside of the rear bumper and it pops open! Should be quite handy when hands are full. The ahem, right spot, needs some training to find, but owners have plenty of chance to figure it out. This comes with the keyless entry option.

The petrol engine line-up comprises a 1.4-litre TSI engine with 122 PS, a 1.8-litre TSI with 160 PS and a 2.0-litre TSI with 210 PS. The full fat range-topper is a 3.6-litre V6 with 300 PS. On the diesel front, a 105 PS 1.6-litre TDI is the starter. A BlueMotion package (includes aero mods, Stop/Start and battery regeneration) with this engine combines to achieve 24.4 km/l while emitting just 109 g/km of CO2. This equates to a possible 1,600 km on a single tank of diesel. A 2.0-litre TDI engine is also available in two power outputs – 140 PS and 170 PS. Manual is standard in Europe, DSG is optional.

UPDATE: Live gallery added after the jump, including the wagon bodytype!

Hope this feature doesn’t move while the engine is running. Otherwise, a Mat Rempit that wants to steal your stuff can just hit the rear bumper to pop the boot open and grab your laptop bag while you stop at the traffic lights!!! Or the rear boot might pop open when the car is hit from behind during an accident..

Should be very convenient for JPJ or Police during the road inspection. instead of asking the driver to open the boot, they will just have to kick the underside of rear bumper and viola! everything is revealed……hahahaha…….or maybe just one of their motorbikes into the rear side of Passat, and everything in the boot will be revealed!

    Passat CC is more cantiq.

totally disappointed. Look like a redesigned car for China market. Thought of getting a passat estate for my next car is down the drain. Total nightmare. VW is going the same way toyota has to come out top. Sad..

I rarely ‘kutuk’ anything. More so after some people have put some effort to produce something.

But…. this car is freaking ugly. There I said it. What were thinking/smoking/drinking? A car for some nouveau riche with no taste?

But then again, maybe our government should make this their official cars.

Aisei….I had been waiting the new Pssat for months and expecting a baby Phaeton look….Really disaapointed with the boxy design plus not much changes of the interior. The plus side is that I could place order for the Passat CC now without hesitation.

The car is fun to drive and is anything but a single device for less. Some say about luxury, but it’s so nice or nicer than some luxury models, I was I think VW will miss this German car in the US next year.
