2022 Nissan Kicks teased for Malaysian launch – X50, HR-V, Corolla Cross rival with e-Power hybrid soon

The Nissan Kicks could finally be launched in Malaysia this year, if Edaran Tan Chong Motor’s (ETCM) recent Chinese New Year greeting video is anything to go by. The B-segment crossover was first mentioned for our market way back in 2018, but at the time, there was no indication of a launch timeline.

Since then, the model has been given a facelift in 2020 and is currently on sale in Thailand, where it is only offered with an e-Power hybrid powertrain. In Thailand, the e-Power system consists of a HR12DE 1.2 litre three-cylinder petrol engine rated at 79 PS and 103 Nm of torque that acts solely as a generator for a 1.57 kWh battery located under the front seats.

The battery powers an EM57 electric motor with 129 PS (95 kW) and 260 Nm that drives the front wheels. With this setup, the engine does not provide drive at all, with only the electric motor being responsible for getting the vehicle to move.

Judging by what’s shown in the 59-second video, it’s very likely we’ll be getting the Kicks with an e-Power system too. In other markets, the crossover gets non-hybrid powertrains, including a HR16DE 1.6 litre naturally-aspirated petrol unit in the United States, while over in China, it’s a HR15DE 1.5 litre NA mill.

Upon arrival, the Kicks will compete against the likes of the Proton X50, Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-3 and Hyundai Kona. Among those rivals, only the HR-V and Corolla Cross have hybrid variants, with the Kona is also available as an all-electric model. Would you be interested in the Kicks when it arrives here?

Sure or not? ETCM had been constantly promising and saying a lot but result kosong. I will believe when you can actually buy it from their showrooms.

Oh and facelifted in 2020 meant there is only 1 more year to go for this current generation. By the time ETCM launches it might be phased out globally, so is ETCM once again recycling old model for our market?

    • What makes you think that result is kosong when Almera came out with better specs, same like Navara.

New civic owners pay only a premium of RM 13k on top of old civic for full ADAS while new almera owners pay a premium of RM 13k on top of old Almera just for AEB alone only. You pay so much just for kosong ADAS with AEB only. WTH!

I believe ETCM management aren’t human beings, maybe they are sloths, or snails.

Kinda late as Nissan should have offered B segment SUV 3 years ago. TC should have learnt the success of Nissan Grand Livina 15 years ago was due to first Japanese brand to offer B-segment MPV and affordable pricing. Now B segment market share is dominated by Perodua Activa, Proton X50, Honda HRV and Toyota Corolla Cross. It will be harder to sell Nissan Kicks unless you offer value for money. Good luck if you can sell more than 1000 a year.

Nissan is late to the party… Only way to make it up is increase the spec sheet but maintain a reasonable price tag. Don’t repeat what was done on previous Almera where the low spec has the boot light removed! Yes, Nissan skimmed on a 50c light bulb in the 21st century for its car boot!

Why Nissan wanna compete with crossover SUV range? They should have consider introducing Nissan Note where Honda Jazz is removed in Mini MPV range. Honda City Hatchback and Toyota Yaris are in hatchback range.
