SAIC Motor Malaysia has chosen this year’s Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) to preview the MG3 Hybrid+. Revealed globally earlier in March this year, the B-segment hatchback has already gone on sale in Thailand and was showcased at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in July.
In terms of the powertrain, the hybrid hatchback comes with a 1.5 litre Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 102 PS (101 hp or 75 kW) and 128 Nm of torque, paired with a three-speed E-AT automatic transmission.
The engine is augmented by an electric motor rated at 136 PS (134 hp or 100 kW) and 250 Nm for a total system output of 194 PS (192 hp or 143 kW). With this setup, the MG3 HEV is claimed to deliver a fuel economy of 26.2 km/l.
As for features, the spec sheet lists 16-inch ‘Atlas’ alloy wheels, three regeneration modes, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, MG iSmart vehicle telematics, a wireless charging pad, leather upholstery, manual front seats with heating function, a 60:40 split-folding rear bench and a 360-degree camera.
No shortage of safety systems either, including six airbags, traction control, ABS, ESP, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, blind spot monitoring, lane change assist, lane keep assist, lane departure warning as well as front collision warning with autonomous emergency braking.
In Thailand, the MG3 Hybrid+ is priced between 579,900 and 619,900 baht (about RM75k and RM80k), with two variants offered – the range-topper gets the suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
If the striking design holds no sway over your decision-making, would you pick the MG3 HEV over other B-segment hatchbacks such as the Honda City Hatchback, Toyota Yaris and Mazda 2? Worth noting that at 4,113 mm long, 1,797 mm wide, 1,502 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,570 mm, the MG hybrid hatchback is comparable in size to the competition.
