As the ASEAN chair this year, Malaysia is hosting the ASEAN Summit twice, as per the regular practice. The first round, the 46th ASEAN Summit, was held in Kuala Lumpur back in May, and now, the 47th ASEAN Summit is set to take place on October 26 to 28. As it was back in May, several major roads and highways in and around the capital will be closed in stages during this period.
According to the Kuala Lumpur command and control centre (KLCCC), rolling and full road closures will be implemented periodically, lasting between 30 and 45 minutes, to facilitate the movement of high-level delegation convoys throughout the period, the New Straits Times reports.
To begin with, routes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Subang towards the city centre, as well as the Putrajaya ring road and KLIA highway, will experience temporary phased closures to accommodate official motorcades.
The main expressways involved are:
- Maju Expressway (MEX)
- North-South Expressway (from Sungai Buloh to Jalan Duta)
- Elite Expressway (from KLIA to Putrajaya)
- New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) (from Subang to Jalan Duta)
- Guthrie Expressway
- KL–Seremban Expressway (from Sungai Besi to city centre)
Heading into Kuala Lumpur, a number of main roads around the city centre will be affected by road closures during the period, with the Golden Triangle area surrounding KLCC expected to experience the most significant traffic disruption. The main and arterial roads that will see road closures are:
- Jalan Ampang
- Jalan Sultan Ismail
- Jalan P. Ramlee
- Jalan Pinang
- Jalan Binjai
- Persiaran KLCC
- Jalan Bukit Bintang
- Jalan Imbi
- Jalan Perak
- Jalan Parlimen
- Jalan Damansara
- Jalan Istana
- Jalan Tun Razak
- Jalan Kuching
Strategic intersections expected to be affected are Jalan Ampang–Jalan P. Ramlee,Jalan Sultan Ismail–Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Perak–Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Perak–Jalan Pinang, Jalan Stonor–Jalan Kia Peng and Jalan Stonor–Persiaran KLCC.
During peak summit hours, heavy vehicles will not be permitted to enter the city centre. The public is advised to avoid the routes listed above and to use public transportation such as the MRT, LRT, Monorail and buses during the period. If you don’t have any essential need to be in the affected areas then, it’s probably best to avoid heading into KL.
