Honda Prelude teased for Malaysia – to launch soon?

The Honda Prelude has been teased by Honda Malaysia in a social media video clip for the company’s 25th anniversary, and the cameo appearance by the two-door coupé suggests its arrival on the Malaysian market.

Having gone on sale in its native Japan in September and set for the United States later this year, the Prelude is priced from from 6,179,800 yen (about RM177k) in Japan, making it around 40% more expensive than the Civic e:HEV EX top variant in its home market.

Extrapolating from Japanese-market prices, a 40% premium above the top Civic variant in Malaysia that is the Civic 2.0L e:HEV RS that is priced at RM167,900, would theoretically price the Prelude at RM235,060. If extrapolated from the Japanese price of the FL5 Civic Type R, the Prelude would be 24% pricier.

Honda Prelude teased for Malaysia – to launch soon?

If compared against the FL5 in Malaysia at RM399,900, the Prelude would be nearly RM496k by that measure, though of course, there has yet to be indicative pricing for the Prelude for the Malaysian market.

The present-day Prelude, codenamed BF1 is a 2+2 coupé featuring the manufacturer’s Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid powertrain from the Civic e:HEV, pairing an Atkinson-cycle 2.0L inline-four petrol with an electric motor to drive the front wheels.

The engine, codenamed LFC-H4, produces 141 PS at 6,000 rpm and 182 Nm at 4,500 rpm which powers a traction motor rated to produce 184 PS and 315 Nm for the front wheels, and the engine can also be clutched in to directly drive the wheels at higher speeds when it is more efficient to do so; total system output is a claimed 203 PS.

While powertrain for the Prelude is shared with the Civic e:HEV, selected chassis components come from the FL5 Civic Type R, such as the dual-axis strut front suspension and adaptive dampers; rolling stock for the Prelude is 19-inch alloy wheels on 235/40R19 tyres.

In addition to several drive modes, the Prelude offers S+ Shift mode, which emulates the characteristics of an eight-speed automatic transmission, and lets the driver “shift gears” through paddles on the steering wheel. Also on the Prelude is Honda Agile Handling Assist, which is said to improve steering responsiveness and stability during cornering, with a newly extended range of application including braking.

0‐100 in 7.2 secs with launch mode, 9.1 secs without. Yeah, dont race with Civic 1.5T at traffic light grand prix with the RM300k (estimated, base on Japanese price) Prelude unless you have time to set up the LM.

More likely in the RM300k range for Malaysia. Anything much more and it’s dead on arrival

It is more expensive than the CTR in Japan, so the Prelude will likely be around 350k if HM brings it in.
