JPJ to continue strict enforcement, public awareness efforts to curb red-light running: Director-general

The road transport department (JPJ) will continue strict enforcement and public awareness efforts to curb running of red lights and improve compliance with traffic regulations, reported New Straits Times. Non-compliance with traffic signals remained a persistent issue that posed serious risks to the public, said JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli.

“It is still occurring. From time to time, there are offences among the public related to non-compliance with road regulations, especially running red lights. As such, the JPJ, in collaboration with the police, will maintain regular patrols and periodic operations to reinforce compliance,” he said.

The JPJ director-general said this in response to calls for tougher action following an incident in Jitra, Kedah where a 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed when a van alleged ran a red light and collided into her motorcycle.

According to an earlier New Straits Times report, the driver of the van involved was arrested to assist with investigations. Initial urine screening for the van driver returned a negative result for drugs, according to police, and investigation has commenced under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, which relates to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

it is a well established fact that if you ride a motorbike in malaysia, you are exempted from traffic laws, except on rare occasions. motorbikes are KING. malaysia will become like Vietnam, Thailand and also India soon.

Funny the DG choose to highlight a case where a van ran a red light and hit a motorcyclist. Unfortunate as that incident is, and obviously no fault to the motorcyclist, I wonder why he choose to close a blind eye to thousands of motorcyclists that run the red daily and the hundreds of accidents per year from that.

Why thousands of motorists especially m/cyclists dare to go against red lights day in, day out?

Answer is lacking of enforcement. They know nothing will happen when they beat the light. Even more important during the strong sun of the day. Its not that they are racing against time but rather they need the cool blowing air when the bike is moving.

Answer is simple. JPJ and police traffic must do a huge and continuous operation nationwide, and on random locations. They do not need to be there 3-4 hours.

An hour is sufficient to flag those motorists down and give them tickets. Then move to a different spot. As long as the pattern is hard to read, no one dares to beat the light as they never know what’s waiting ahead.

Key word here is random. And maybe stern action. And safety.

Especially the riders with green, orange, pink bags.
They r mostly color blind.Red lights means “boleh memecut juga”.
Time for the ehailing platforms to blacklist or ban riders after twice running red lights.
PDRM should get hakim to gantong lesen riders for 3 years after 3 samans for running red lights.
