The Volkswagen Golf R-Line Mk8.5 gets officially priced in Malaysia at RM185,990, but the first 50 early birds who make a booking will enjoy RM6k off which takes the pricetag down to RM179,990, inclusive of Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP) which means 5 years free maintenance to go with the 5 year 150,000 km warranty, and 5 year road side assistance.

The Mk8.5 Golf measures 4,289 mm long, 1,799 mm wide and 1,483 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,631 mm. Max luggage capacity is 1,237 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Under the hood is a 1.5 litre eTSI (mild hybrid) turbo engine producing 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque, paired to a 7-speed dry clutch DSG gearbox that drives the front wheels. It hits the 100 km/h mark in 8.6 seconds and features XDS electronic differential locking.

At the front you get IQ.Light LED matrix headlamps and at the rear you have the IQ.Light 3D LED light clusters. The side view highlight is the new Coventry design alloy wheels wrapped with 225/45R17 tyres.

On the inside, the seats are R-Line fabric and ArtVelours microfleece upholstery, with a 12.9 inch infotainment system with GPS navigation, paired with 7-speakers. The instrument cluster is digital as well, featuring a 10 inch high resolution Digital Cockpit Pro screen. You also get wireless charging.

In terms of safety, you get seven airbags and IQ.Drive safety features including rear traffic alert, lane and emergency assist, side assist, travel assist, AEB, and adaptive cruise control. There are two ISOFIX child seat points at the rear left and right seats.

Finally, we note that you can actually buy the car without the VAP program if you want, netting you a savings of RM10k, but other than losing the 5 year free maintenance you also get the warranty period cut down to 2 years.

RM180k but 0-100 in 8.6 secs… better by Civic FC with bigger space and better resale value. this Golf should be around RM150k only.

This is why they dont sell Jetta, Polo, and the Mk8 Golf here anymore (the one above is Mk8.5). Theyre too expensive now and the lack of demand also.

Maybe they think its okay now because the top trim Civic and Mazda 3 is only 15k-20k cheaper then this.

  • lol..quick gpt comparison, this 1.5L is 31PS and 40Nm lower than china’s engine in new x50..vw even using dry DSG compared to geely’s wet dct..guess they cover it up with 5 years warranty

  • DRY CLUTCH????!!!! on Feb 06, 2026 at 12:02 pm

7-speed dry clutch DSG gearbox ….nail to the coffin. If you have extra budget just get the GTI with the super reliable wet clutch DSG which is being used by all other VW without problems. (arteon, Tiguan, GTI, Golf R…etc). Dont bother with this ….even Chinese DCT using WET Clutches!! wTF vw is smoking????
