Chery Corporate Malaysia has been announced as the official sponsor of the inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup, to be held this year. As the name suggests, the youth badminton tournament was founded by Malaysian icon Lee Chong Wei, with the intention of nurturing young talents at the grassroots level.
The competition, which unlike most junior tournaments will be broadcast on Astro, is supported by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and will involve male and female singles and doubles players in the under-13, under-15 and under-17 categories, as well as mixed doubles players in the under-17 category. There will be 128 slots allocated across all age groups and categories.
Up for grabs are prizes worth a total of RM100,000 – said to be the largest prize pool ever offered for a Malaysian youth badminton tournament – with winners also being able to trial for BAM. More details, including the exact dates, will be announced in the coming weeks.
“At Chery, we believe in supporting initiatives that create lasting value for society. Partnering with the Lee Chong Wei Cup allows us to contribute to a programme that nurtures talent, promotes inclusivity and instils strong values through sport,” said Chery Corporate Malaysia vice president Cheng Nam Weng. “As one of the fastest-growing international automotive brands in Malaysia, we are proud to play a role in strengthening the nation’s sporting future.”
The Chinese carmaker is no stranger to sponsoring Malaysian sports, having previously supported the country’s Olympic medallists at the 2024 Paris games with prize cars, as well as the national contingent at the Asian Youth Para Games.
