Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 in Malaysia – R-Line with 150 PS 1.5L MHEV, dry DSG; GTI 265 PS RM250k with VAP

At last, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has launched the facelifted Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5, marking the return of the regular R-Line variant alongside the GTI. The big news is that the R-Line debuts a mild hybrid powertrain, having previously stuck with a long-serving 1.4 litre petrol mill.

Both variants are CKD locally assembled in Pekan, Pahang, but only the GTI is introduced today, with the R-Line set to be offered at a later date. The hot hatch is priced at RM255,490 nett, inclusive of a Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP) five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and free service offering (RM242,990 with the standard two-year warranty). For early-bird buyers, the VAP-inclusive figure is slashed to RM249,990 until December 31, limited to the first 50 units.

Right, on to that new powertrain. Malaysia finally joins other global markets by offering the R-Line with the latest 1.5 litre EA211 Evo turbo four-cylinder engine with active cylinder deactivation, producing 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque. Supporting this mill is a 48-volt belt-driven starter-generator that assists in acceleration and engine start/stop smoothness, plus it allows the engine to turn off while coasting.

The transmission sees another sea change, with the R-Line ditching the eight-speed automatic and going back to a seven-speed DSG dry dual-clutch transmission. This model gets from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds and delivers a combined fuel consumption of 5.2 litres per 100 km.

Meanwhile, the GTI retains its 2.0 litre EA888 turbo four-pot, boosted by 20 PS to 265 PS and 370 Nm. With an unchanged seven-speed wet-clutch DSG, the car completes the century sprint half a second quicker than before at 5.9 seconds. Variable-ratio steering, an XDS electronic front differential lock and Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive dampers continue to be fitted.

Introduced globally in January 2024, the Mk8.5 revision brings slimmer headlights with IQ.Light matrix LED technology, paired with a freshly-illuminated VW badge. The IQ.Light 3D LED taillights, meanwhile, get C-shaped graphics, smoked internals and a clear lens.

Both the R-Line and GTI receive the same sportier look, featuring a new, angrier-looking “fanged” bumper and unchanged side skirts, rear bumper and diffuser-like valance. The front fender appliqués are also gone, replaced by simpler badges denoting the trim on the front doors. The R-Line sports the usual R badges and rides on 17-inch Coventry two-tone five-spoke alloy wheels.

    Volkswagen Golf GTI

The GTI, meanwhile, comes with distinctive five-a-side hexagonal “chequered flag” fog lights, red GTI badges and dual visible exhaust exits. Unfortunately, it continues to roll on 18-inch Richmond turbine-style alloys, so no 19-inch “telephone dial” wheels for us. Notably, the upgraded ID.Light headlights mean that the GTI finally gets the full red “unibrow” across the lamps and grille.

Inside, Volkswagen has made a series of usability tweaks, including a brand new (and hopefully much faster) infotainment system with touchscreen sizes up to 12.9 inches (previously ten inches max), illuminated air-con control sliders (finally) and physical steering wheel controls – in the style of the previous Mk7 model – to replace the capacitive touch items. There’s also a new IDA voice control system with ChatGPT integration.

    Volkswagen Golf GTI

Both variants get thicker steering wheels, alloy pedals, sports seats with integrated headrests and black headlining to distance themselves from the standard Golf. The R-Line is upholstered in grey fabric with an embroidered R logo and “Artvelours” faux suede bolsters, as well as Carbon Grey dash trim.

Step into the GTI and you’ll instead find red trim on the steering wheel, black, grey and red Vienna leather upholstery and Black Metal Chrome decor. The GTI is also the only one with a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, a head-up display and a 12-speaker, 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system (seven speakers on the R-Line).

    Volkswagen Golf GTI

Standard kit includes keyless entry, push-button start, triple-zone auto climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated door mirrors and steering wheel, 30-colour ambient lighting, a ten-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument display, built-in navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a Qi wireless charger.

Safety-wise, the Mk8.5 gets the full IQ.Drive suite of driver assists, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, evasive steering assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a driver attention monitor, a door opening warning and adaptive high beam. Seven airbags – including a front centre airbag – and stability control are standard.

Volkswagen Golf GTI, R-Line Mk8.5 Malaysia debut at ACE 2025, Nov 8 and 9 – new tech, physical buttons

We may have called it a bit early before, but this time it’s for real. Yes, we’re finally getting the latest Mk8.5 Volkswagen Golf, which is set to make its public debut at the paultan.org Auto Car Expo (ACE) this weekend, November 8 and 9, ahead of the official launch. The big news is the return of the standard R-Line model, joining the hot GTI.

No details have been released just yet, but the revised hatch will sport a mild redesign that hides a welcome tech upgrade, addressing a key gripe on the Mk8. Unveiled back in January 2024, it features slimmer headlights, new taillights with C-shaped graphics and a mildly re-profiled rear bumper.

The GTI additionally gains an angrier “fanged” front bumper (still with the five hexagonal fog lights on either side) and the ditching of the chrome fender appliqués, the GTI badge now moved to the front doors. It also marks the return of the beloved “telephone dial” alloy wheels (now measuring 19 inches) that were first introduced on the Mk5 GTI.

The teaser image shows a new illuminated VW badge, indicating the presence of the optional IQ.Light matrix LED headlights. The R-Line will look almost exactly like the GTI, but without the red front “unibrow”, fog lights and visible tailpipes, plus different wheels.

Under the bonnet of the GTI lies the venerable 2.0 litre EA888 turbo four-cylinder engine, but with power boosted by 20 PS to 265 PS; torque holds station at 370 Nm. You still get a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, an XDS electronic front differential lock and Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive dampers.

As for the R-Line, it will likely be powered by the same 150 PS/250 Nm 1.4 litre turbo four as before, mated to an eight-speed automatic. The company had previously offered the car starting in July 2022, but pulled it from sale after less than a year.

If you want to check out the new Golf GTI and R-Line in person, ACE 2025 will take place on November 8 to 9 from 9am to 7pm at the Setia City Convention Centre (SCCC). Entrance is free.

Volkswagen Golf R to get 400 PS/500 Nm five-cylinder 2.5T from Audi RS3; top variant of Mk8.5 to debut 2027

    2025 Volkswagen Golf R facelift

The Volkswagen Golf R is set to receive a larger, more powerful for its upcoming iteration, reports Autocar. According to the publication, the uprated variant of the brand’s performance hatchback is expected to debut in 2027, before the Golf range turns to electrification.

The five-cylinder powerplant, codenamed EA855 produces 400 PS and 500 Nm of torque in the current, facelifted Audi RS3, which continues to be offered in sedan and Sportback (hatchback) bodystyles. In the wider Volkswagen Group, the five-pot engine also features in the Cupra Formentor VZ5 crossover which emerged in 2021.

The current Mk8.5 Golf R packs the familiar 2.0 litre EA888 inline-four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which outputs 333 PS and 420 Nm.

Volkswagen Golf R to get 400 PS/500 Nm five-cylinder 2.5T from Audi RS3; top variant of Mk8.5 to debut 2027

In order to keep the EA855 five-cylinder engine compliant with Euro 7 emissions regulations which are to take effect in November 2026, Audi will update the engine with a new particulate filter, more sensitive NOx sensors, recalibrated injection mapping and higher cell-density catalytic converters, according to Autocar.

Uprated engine outputs mean greater forces at play, and so the five-cylinder version of the Golf R is expected to gain revised chassis geometry, upgraded suspension top mounts, reinforced knuckles and added chassis bracing to improve torsional rigidity. The front axle from the Audi RS3 could also feature in the uprated Golf R should packaging permit its inclusion.

Volkswagen had signalled its intent to use the turbocharged five-cylinder engine in the Golf since its seventh-generation guise, with the R400 Concept, and then with what was thought to be known as the R420 which was sighted undergoing testing, though news of its development towards production and sale went cold thereafter.

  • 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 debuts – 325 PS, 420 Nm; fastest production VW on the Nurburgring

2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 debuts – 325 PS, 420 Nm; fastest production VW on the Nurburgring

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the original Volkswagen Golf GTI going on sale in Germany in 1976 following its world premiere in 1975. To celebrate the occasion, the German automaker is presenting the new Golf GTI Edition 50, the most powerful production Golf GTI to date.

Under the bonnet, the Edition 50 gets a modified version of the engine used in the Golf GTI Clubsport. Instead of 300 PS (296 hp or 221 kW), the commemorative model packs 325 PS (321 hp or 239 kW), which is also a lot more than a regular Golf GTI that has 265 PS (261 hp or 195 kW). Meanwhile, peak torque is up by 20 Nm compared to the Clubsport to hit 420 Nm (regular Golf GTI offers 370 Nm).

Other powertrain changes worth mentioning include a ride height that is 15 mm lower than the basic Golf GTI and an optional GTI Performance package. The latter further lowers the car by five mm while introducing higher spring rates, which also sees the natural frequency at the front and rear axles increased by around 20%.

2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 debuts – 325 PS, 420 Nm; fastest production VW on the Nurburgring

According to Volkswagen, this results in better support characteristics, a much more direct response and a lower tendency to roll and pitch. The optional package also includes adapted suspension mounts, 19-inch ‘Warmenau’ forged wheels and 235/35 Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres.

Each wheel weighs eight kg, which is three kg less than the standard 19-inch wheel, while each tyre is 1.1 kg lighter. Volkswagen also notes it worked closely with Bridgestone to ensure the Potenza Race rubbers provide more grip with less rolling resistance. To trim even more weight, there’s an optional Akrapovic titanium exhaust system to save a further 11 kg.

Along with a host of suspension revisions, the Edition 50 lapped the Nurburgring in a blistering 7:46:13 minutes, a new record for any production Volkswagen, with racing driver Benny Leuchter behind the wheel of a near-production test vehicle of the Edition 50. The company’s previous best time around the track 7:47:31 minutes, also set by Leuchtner in a Golf R in 2022.

As for the aesthetics, the Edition 50 has the ‘GTI 50’ logo on its roof spoiler as well as the insides of the side mirrors. There’s also special trim on the door sills, a black-painted roof, black side mirror housings, black tailpipe trims and side stripes with a colour gradient from black to Tornado Red. The Edition 50 can had in either Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black and two exclusive options: Dark Moss Green and Tornado Red.

Inside, you’ll find sport seats with check pattern, a line in Racing Green and synthetic velour elements. The Edition 50 also comes with red seatbelts, a newly designed sports steering wheel with ‘GTI 50’ at the bottom spoke and integrated shift paddles for the seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels.

Pricing for the Edition 50 will be announced later on, and deliveries will start from the first quarter of 2026 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Golf GTI’s first market launch decades ago.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8.5 to get 50th anniversary special, reveal at Nürburgring 24 Hours in June

    Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport Mk8.5

The progenitor of the hot hatch genre, the Volkswagen Golf GTI hits the half-century mark next year, and Wolfsburg is celebrating the milestone with a 50th anniversary special edition of the Mk8.5 this June. That date wasn’t picked at random – it coincides with the Nürburgring 24 Hours from June 19 to 22, where race versions of the car will aim to secure a second successive class victory.

Not much was revealed in the press release, but Autocar expects the commemorative model to be based on the most potent Clubsport variant – just one rung down from the full-fledged R. That car, revealed at last year’s race, gets a tuned version of the venerable 2.0 litre EA888 turbo four-cylinder that sends 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque to the front wheels via seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

So equipped, the Clubsport gets from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds – three tenths of a second quicker than the regular Mk8.5 – plus a higher 267 km/h top speed with the Race package equipped. There are also bigger brakes and a Nürburgring-tuned “Special” drive mode, along with aggressive exterior modifications and black graphics.

The 50th anniversary model is not to be confused with Malaysia’s Mk8 GTI Edition 50

By the way, the golden jubilee Grand Touring Injection is not to be confused with last year’s bog-standard Edition 50 that celebrated 50 years of the regular Golf, nor the locally-developed model based on the Mk8 GTI. That car was equipped with an Oettinger bodykit, new wheels and interior bits from the global Edition 50.

Aside from the new model, Volkswagen will also display its latest range of Golf R models at the Green Hell, including the Variant wagon and the Black Edition.

  • 2025 Volkswagen Mk8.5 Golf R hatch, Golf R Variant estate – 333 PS/420 Nm 2.0T AWD, 270 km/h top speed

    2025 Volkswagen Mk8.5 Golf R hatch, Golf R Variant estate – 333 PS/420 Nm 2.0T AWD, 270 km/h top speed

The Mk8 Volkswagen Golf R has been updated for the 2025 model year, shortly after the Malaysian market received the pre-facelift model last month. In updated ‘Mk8.5’ guise, the Golf R range brings visual and technical updates, with both five-door hatchback and Variant estate bodystyles making their debut at the same time, along with a Black Edition for the former.

Powertrain for the Golf R is the 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four cylinder petrol engine that now outputs 333 PS and 420 Nm of torque, representing increases of 13 PS and 20 Nm over the pre-facelift model. This also makes the Mk8.5 Golf R the most powerful iteration of the Golf produced, according to Volkswagen.

Driveline specification carries on as before, with the engine mated to a DSG seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel-drive. Specified thus, the Mk8.5 Golf R does the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds, or 0.2 second quicker than the outgoing model. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h, while an optional R-Performance package increases this to 270 km/h for both the hatchback and Variant estate.

2025 Volkswagen Golf R Variant and Golf R Black Edition

The Mk8.5 facelift for the Golf R brings R-Performance Torque Vectoring to the 4Motion AWD driveline, which aims to improve stability and agility through distributing drive between each rear wheel when cornering.

The optional R-Performance package that brings the aforementioned higher top speed also features two additional driving modes; Drift which aims to do as its name suggests, and Special, which is set up for more challenging road conditions such as on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Adaptive chassis control (DCC) features as standard in the Mk8.5 Golf R, where the vehicle’s running gear are optimised by the Vehicle Dynamics Manager.

Externally, the 2025 Golf R range gets the IQ.Light Matrix LED headlamps as on regular and GTI variants of the Golf Mk8.5, while the front bumper features more aggressive styling and larger air intakes. Rolling stock for the Mk8.5 Golf R is a set of 19-inch ‘Warmenau’ forged alloy wheels which weight 8 kg per unit and offer efficient brake cooling, which is beneficial for track driving, says Volkswagen.

All versions of the Mk8.5 Golf R get the 10.2-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrumentation, along with the 12.9-inch floating infotainment display that grants access to the IDA voice-activated assistant and ChatGPT. Driver instrumentation brings an enhanced Sport Skin that features a central, rounded rpm display in an R-specific design, along with an R-View that brings a horizontal rpm display.

The Mk8.5 Golf R range continues to get driver and front passenger sports seats with integrated head restraints, with optional black Nappa leather upholstery and carbon-look trim with contrasting blue elements, and ‘R’ badging in the backrests. Also optional are carbon-fibre interior trim components.

Offered in the European market is the Golf R Black Edition, which, as its name suggests, brings a blacked-out look for the all-wheel-drive hatchback. Featured here are darkened VW badges and R logos, black ‘R’ brake calipers with darkened logos, 19-inch ‘Estoril’ alloy wheels in black, and black exhaust pipe outlets. The IQ.Light LED matrix headlamps also receive the darkened look, and the Black Edition also gets the R-Performance pack as standard.

In Europe, the 2025 Volkswagen Mk8.5 Golf starts from 53,795 euros (RM271,605), while the Golf R Variant starts from 55,065 euros (RM278,018); the Golf R Black Edition starts from 58,440 euros (RM295,058).

    2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport Mk8.5 debuts – more aggressive styling, 300 PS; 0-100 km/h in 5.6s

At the recent Nürburgring 24 Hours, Volkswagen revealed the new Golf GTI Clubsport based on the latest facelifted Golf GTI Mk8.5 that made its debut in January this year.

The new Golf GTI Clubsport shares the EA888 evo4 engine as the regular Golf GTI, but where the latter gets a power bump to 265 PS (261 hp or 195 kW) while retaining 370 Nm of torque, the former sticks to the same 300 PS (296 hp or 221 kW) and 400 Nm as the previous Mk8 model. Both variants are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to send drive to the front wheels.

In terms of performance, the standard GTI needs 5.9 seconds to get from 0-100 km/h, while the Clubsport is quicker at 5.6 seconds. The top speed of both cars is electronically limited at 250 km/h, but the Clubsport gets an exclusive Race package option that removes the cap for a higher top speed of 267 km/h.

    2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport Mk8.5 debuts – more aggressive styling, 300 PS; 0-100 km/h in 5.6s

To add to the driving performance, the Clubsport also comes with a larger 18-inch brake system compared to the 17-inch setup on the normal GTI. An electronically-controlled front differential lock (XDS+) is standard on both models, along with the Vehicle Dynamics Manager and Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC).

Four drive modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual) are available to the driver, with the Clubsport gaining a fifth option known as Special that adjust the vehicle systems to match the specific track characteristics of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

As for styling, the Clubsport is set apart from a regular GTI by its more expressive front apron with larger wings shaped like arrows towards the inside. The front spoiler, grille in the bumper and surrounding trim are also finished in high-gloss black.

    2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport Mk8.5 debuts – more aggressive styling, 300 PS; 0-100 km/h in 5.6s

The rear is closely matched but the Clubsport has a larger spoiler and the twin-pipe system can be swapped for an Akrapovic sports exhaust with the optional Race package. From the factory, the Clubsport rides on 18-inch ‘Richmond’ wheels, although 19-inch wheels are also offered, including forged ‘Warmenau’ units that are 20% lighter than comparable alloy wheels.

Other changes are reflective of those made to the standard Golf GTI, including the revised headlamps and taillights. The fourth-generation modular infotainment system (MIB4) is part of the update and is available in Ready 2 Discover and Discover versions, both accompanied by 12.9-inch central touchscreen and ChatGPT integration.

The Digital Cockpit Pro with its 10.2-inch instrument cluster is standard in the Clubsport too, joined by an optional head-up display and premium sports seats in ArtVelours fabric. To spruce things up further, Volkswagen offers optional carbon-fibre interior trim and a 480W Harman Kardon sound system.

  • Volkswagen confirms more CKD models coming to Malaysia – return of base Golf with Mk8.5, Audi Q7/Q8?

Volkswagen confirms more CKD models coming to Malaysia – return of base Golf with Mk8.5, Audi Q7/Q8?

During the media drive event of the new Volkswagen Touareg earlier this week, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) held a Q&A session in which senior officials fielded questions related to the car and the company. In particular, its managing director Denyu Bostandzhiev shared some interesting details regarding the future of the brand.

Asked by paultan.org whether there will be any new models priced below the RM200,000 mark aside from the Tiguan Allspace (which starts at RM164,190), Bostanzhiev said: “There will be a car [in this price range]. I cannot tell you now when exactly, but I’d say quite soon.”

The real juicy part came later on, when the company boss indicated VPCM’s desire to reintroduce a regular (read: non-GTI or R) Golf sometime in the future. “We can assure you that something is happening with the Golf. Everybody’s waiting for the normal Golf. We’re working on it. We’d like to have the full range of the Golf. We have been owning the segment and we will own the segment in the future as well, it belongs to us.”

You may remember that the current Mk8 Golf was launched here in standard CKD R-Line guise back in July 2022 – after a protracted wait for its price to be approved – but was pulled from sale after less than a year. We can presume that it was killed due to slow sales, likely due to its high RM170,560 price and its lack of driver assistance kit.

Volkswagen confirms more CKD models coming to Malaysia – return of base Golf with Mk8.5, Audi Q7/Q8?

The Mk8 Golf R-Line was pulled from sale after less than a year

A rejigged specification with a lower price and/or the inclusion of VW’s IQ.Drive safety suite could make the business case for the standard Mk8 Golf work, but VPCM might instead be waiting for the new Mk8.5 model to bring the variant back. That car has already been comprehensively ruled out for this year, with the Touareg and the special-edition 50th anniversary Golf GTI (the latter will be limited to 50 units, it’s been confirmed) being the company’s big launches for 2024.

But that’s not all – Bostandzhiev also confirmed there will be another new model to help offset the cost of localising the CKD Touareg. The car is being locally assembled in Pekan, Pahang, the first time this is happening outside of VW’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia.

The company is only targeting to capture a 10% share of the already tiny premium executive SUV market in Malaysia – a segment dominated by the also-CKD BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. That’s not a lot of volume for such a huge investment; the Touareg, let’s not forget, is based on the MLB Evo platform not shared with other Volkswagen brand models.

“[We need to] share technologies, share investments. I’m not allowed to tell you, but something is cooking. There will be a different model that will appear,” said Bostandzhiev.

Volkswagen confirms more CKD models coming to Malaysia – return of base Golf with Mk8.5, Audi Q7/Q8?

The use of the term “different model” is key, because it hints that it won’t simply be a variant of the Touareg, meaning we’ll have to look outside the VW brand. Currently, there are five large SUV models built on the MLB Evo architecture – the Audi Q7 and Q8, Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.

The Cayenne is already being built here at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah; we can also rule out the Bentayga and the Urus given their exclusivity and market positioning, leaving only the Audis as the viable options. This tracks with comments from Bostandzhiev (who is also MD of Audi distributor PHS Automotive Malaysia, or PHSAM) earlier this year, in which he confirmed the brand’s plans to assemble cars locally.

Helping Ingolstadt’s case is the fact that both the Q7 and Q8 can be had with the Touareg’s 340 PS 3.0 litre turbocharged V6 and eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Of the two, the more practical Q7 – which recently received its second facelift – is the one that makes the most sense given it will be the volume seller, with the added benefit of seven seats to further differentiate it from the five-seater Touareg.

  • Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 not coming to Malaysia 2024, says VPCM – 50th anniversary edition is of Mk8 GTI

Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 not coming to Malaysia 2024, says VPCM – 50th anniversary edition is of Mk8 GTI

Earlier this week, we reported on Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) managing director Dentyu Bostandzhiev’s remarks regarding the company’s planned 50th anniversary celebrations for the Golf. At the time, we assumed this meant the new Golf Mk8.5 would be coming this year, but a source at VPCM has since clarified this is not the case.

The facelifted model is not expected to arrive in Malaysia until next year at the earliest. This makes sense, as production has yet to start, and it would take time for the tooling to be installed for CKD local assembly. In case you didn’t know, the Hicom plant in Pekan, Pahang is the only facility to assemble the Golf outside VW’s Wolfsburg headquarters and FAW in China.

The CKD Mk8 Golf R Performance was delayed due to production issues with the AWD system

Instead, VPCM’s half-centenary celebrations for the Golf will involve a special edition of the current Mk8 GTI. Expect limited units to be offered with unique stickers, badging and possibly some additional equipment, as seen on past local special editions.

The later timeline for the Mk8.5’s introduction will also give VPCM a bit of a reprieve with regard to the CKD Mk8 Golf R Performance, which has yet to be launched despite being previewed back in August. When asked about the delay during the Touareg launch, Bostandzhiev said this was due to production issues related to the hot hatch’s trick all-wheel-drive system, adding that it will go on sale in “a couple of weeks.”

Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 facelift coming to Malaysia this year – special 50th anniversary edition GTI too

UPDATE: Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has confirmed that the Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 won’t be coming to Malaysia this year. Instead, the 50th anniversary special edition mentioned in this article will be based on the current Mk8 GTI.

Ahead of the launch of the new Volkswagen Touareg this afternoon, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) managing director Denyu Bostandzhiev took to the stage to give his speech, which came with a tantalising teaser about the company’s future plans.

Bostandzhiev said the company had big plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Golf, which has been kicking around since 1974. While his statement was ambiguous, the mere mention of this can only mean one thing – the facelifted Golf Mk8.5 is coming to Malaysia this year.

As a refresher, the revised five-door hatchback that was revealed in January features slimmer headlights (with a new IQ.Light matrix LED option made available), an even larger “smiley” lower grille lifted from the new B9 Passat, new taillights with C-shaped graphics and a mildly reprofiled rear bumper.

The hot GTI version gains an angrier “fanged” front bumper (still with the five hexagonal fog lights on either side) and loses the fake fender “vents”, the GTI badged now moved to the front doors. It also marks the return of the beloved “telephone dial” alloy wheels that were first introduced on the Mk5 GTI. However, the bigger changes are to be found on the inside, where Volkswagen has implemented several usability tweaks in response to a barrage of media and customer complaints.

These include a brand new (and hopefully much faster) infotainment system with touchscreen sizes up to 12.9 inches (previously ten inches max), illuminated air-con control sliders (finally) and physical steering wheel controls – in the style of the previous Mk7 model – to replace the capacitive touch items. There’s also a new IDA voice control system with ChatGPT integration.

Under the bonnet, the rejigged Golf is globally available with a choice of four turbocharged petrol engines, two turbodiesels, two 48-volt mild hybrid petrol engines and two plug-in hybrid variants. On the GTI model, the venerable 2.0 litre turbo mill gets a 20 PS power boost to 261 hp, still mated to a seven-speed DSG wet dual-clutch transmission.

The GTI is currently the only variant on sale in Malaysia – the R-Line was dropped last March, and the high-performance R model has yet to be formally launched in CKD form, despite being previewed in August – and we expect it to remain this way for now.

Now, one might be wondering how VPCM is getting the Mk8.5 Golf in so quickly, having taken two and a half years for the preceding Mk8 (and a whopping six years for the third-generation Touareg). One advantage the company has this time around is that the plant in Pekan, Pahang has now been outfitted with tooling for the Mk8 generation, so a minor change shouldn’t be too hard to implement.

Bostandzhiev offered another teaser during the event, saying that VPCM will be celebrating the Golf’s half-centenary with a special edition GTI. This points to the Golf Edition 50, which comes with “50” B-pillar and steering wheel badges as well as Edition 50 side sill scuff plates.

The Golf Edition 50 offered overseas

There’s only one problem with this – the Edition 50 is only offered on cooking versions of the Golf, not the GTI model. Of course, because the car will be CKD locally assembled, adding these bits to the hot version wouldn’t be too difficult. We also shouldn’t discount the possibility that this will be a locally-developed special edition that’s specific to our market.

So, are you excited for the VW Golf Mk8.5? We certainly would – it will be interesting to drive a new Golf with the Mk8’s usability kinks ironed out.

  • 2024 Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 facelift debuts – styling tweaks, physical buttons, GTE and GTI get more power

2024 Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 facelift debuts – styling tweaks, physical buttons, GTE and GTI get more power

The Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 facelift has made its debut in the year the nameplate celebrates its 50th anniversary and over 37 million units sold. As before, the latest iteration of the Golf sees quite a number of changes and will continue to be offered in hatchback and Variant (wagon) forms.

In terms of styling revisions, the one that is immediately obvious are the redesigned headlamps that are slimmer and feature hexagonal-shaped DRLs that are lit up on the sides. The headlamps come in three configurations, including standard LEDs and a performance option, the latter accompanied by an illuminated Volkswagen badge and light bars – this is a first in Europe.

The third option is the IQ.Light LED matrix system – also with an illuminated badge – that has a range of up to 500 metres at night. At the rear, the taillights now have a new lighting signature and even come with a 3D effect if you opt for the IQ.Light option.

Another exterior change is a more expressive front bumper, which is full-width with horizontal trim on regular Golf variants, while GTE and GTI models gain fang-like elements to join the inset LED fog lamps embedded into the honeycomb mesh trim pattern.

Volkswagen also notes there are four new paint finishes (Crystal Ice Blue Metallic, Anemone Blue Metallic, Oyster Silver Metallic and Grenadilla Black Metallic) for a total of 11 hues, with a black-painted roof available as an option for R-Line, GTE and GTI versions. Five new alloy wheels with sizes going up to 19 inches have also been added.

As for the interior, we’ve already gotten a good look at the changes in prior teasers that confirm a return to conventional buttons on the steering wheel instead of touch-based controls. The latter is still present inside the cabin in the form of sliders for controlling the climate system, but they’re now illuminated to make them easier to find in the dark.

Volkswagen’s fourth-generation modular infotainment system (MIB4) makes its way into the new Golf and is available in two versions. The basic Ready 2 Discover option comes with a 10.4-inch central touchscreen, while the top-of-the-line Discover version brings a 12.9-inch display.

Joining the infotainment screen is a 10.2-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster that is standard across the Golf range and configurable, with model-specific information profiles available for R-Line, GTI and GTE models. A windscreen-projected head-up display is an option for both the Golf and Golf Variant.

Upgrades to driver assistance come in the form of Park Assist Pro, which enables the vehicle to be driven into and out of parking spaces using a smartphone. There’s also Area View that offers drivers a 360-degree all-round view created by merging four cameras, with the corresponding image shown on the infotainment touchscreen.

In Europe, the Golf will be offered in six equipment packages, starting with an entry-level option which is followed by the Life, Style and R-Line, before progressing to the GTE and GTI. On that mention, let’s focus on powertrains.

Volkswagen says the facelifted Golf will be available with four turbocharged petrol engines (TSI), two turbodiesel engines (TDI), two 48-volt mild hybrid turbocharged petrol engines (eTSI) as well as two plug-in hybrid petrol systems (eHybrid and GTE). In the second half of 2024, the Golf GTI Clubsport, Golf R and Golf Variant R will make their debuts, joined by all-wheel drive versions with TSI engines in 2025.

The TSI engines available at market launch include a 1.5 litre unit with either 113 hp or 148 hp, paired with a six-speed manual transmission sending drive to the front wheels. There’s a mild hybrid version of this engine (1.5 eTSI) that has the same outputs but can only be had with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG). A step up is the 2.0 litre TSI with 201 hp and a seven-speed DSG.

Those who want a diesel have the choice of a 2.0 TDI with 113 hp and six-speed manual, or 148 hp with a seven-speed DSG – both are front-wheel drive. Moving on to the plug-in hybrids, the eHybrid comes with 201 hp, a 1.5 litre TSI, a six-speed DSG, an electric motor, front-wheel drive and a larger lithium-ion battery with 19.7 kWh instead of 10.6 kWh.

With the increased battery capacity, the all-electric range is doubled to 100 km, and the good news continues with an increased AC charging capacity of 11 kW (previously 3.6 kW) as well as support for DC fast charging at 50 kW – the latter allows a 10-80% state of charge to be reached in just 25 minutes. Volkswagen claims the eHybrid setup will allow for up to 1,000 km of range before a refuel is needed.

The performance version of the eHybrid setup is found in the GTE that has a combined output of 268 hp, which is a 27 hp increase from before. The GTI also sees a power bump of 20 hp to 261 hp, but it will no longer be offered with a six-speed manual, leaving just a seven-speed DSG as the only transmission option.

  • 2024 Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 FL teased – debut soon

2024 Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 FL teased – debut soon

As the Volkswagen Golf reaches its 50th anniversary this year, the German manufacturer has offered a glimpse at what’s likely to be the upcoming facelift iteration of its eighth-generation hatchback that is expected to make its debut not long from now.

Shown towards the end of a highlights round-up in a YouTube video on a the Volkswagen News channel, the Golf Mk8 facelift was shown in a low-light, frontal view that shows the car’s headlamp DRL signature that has been updated to be more angular, seen here to resemble a pair of opposed arrows on each lamp.

This frontal view also reveals that the upcoming Golf facelift will continue to feature a full-width LED light bar incorporating an illuminated VW logo, and given the presence of roof rails, a Golf of this bodystyle appears to be the Golf Variant, or station wagon.

Technically more significant changes are expected in the cabin of the Golf Mk8 facelift, as reported by Car Magazine. In response to criticism of its touchscreen and touch control surfaces, the upcoming facelift appears to revert to conventional button in certain areas such as on the multifunction steering wheel, according to a spy image of a Mk8 facelift development unit.

This could also see the arrival of the carmaker’s MIB4 infotainment software that has been implemented in the third-generation Tiguan, and could also adopt the SUVs revised platform, dubbed MQB evo.

In Malaysia, the locally assembled (CKD) Golf Mk8 TSI R-Line was taken off sale in March 2023, first previewed in November 2021 and its pricing revealed in July 2022.
