2026 Toyota Harrier 2.5 HEV in Malaysia – 217 PS hybrid is the new sole XU80 variant, RM289,000 OTR

2026 Toyota Harrier 2.5 HEV in Malaysia – 217 PS hybrid is the new sole XU80 variant, RM289,000 OTR

Earlier this month, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) introduced the Toyota Harrier 2.5 HEV in Malaysia. The hybrid updates the fourth-gen XU80 in the country, but remains the sole option for the SUV in the local line-up, taking over from the 2.0 Luxury that was launched here in April 2021.

The switch to a hybrid powertrain also sees an increase in the price. The Harrier 2.5 HEV is priced from RM289,000 (on-the-road, without insurance), which means it’s slightly more expensive than when the 2.0 litre version was updated in 2022, then priced at RM274,000 for the Luxury and RM277,000 for the Luxury SE.

Power is up from the old model. On this one, a 2.5 litre A25A-FXS Dynamic Force engine, which offers 178 PS (176 hp) at 5,700 rpm and 221 Nm from 3,600 rpm to 5,200 rpm, works with a 120 PS (118 hp, or 88 kW) and 202 Nm electric motor to deliver a total system output of 217 PS, with power sent to the front wheels. The 2.0 litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder on the previous one had 173 PS and 203 Nm for its output numbers.

The exterior equipment list includes automatic bi-LED projector headlamps and LED indicators, LED DRLs, LED foglamps and LED combination tail lamps, as well as auto-folding mirrors with integrated indicators, a kick sensor-equipped hands-free tailgate and a fixed panoramic sunroof. The Harrier 2.5 HEV rides on 18-inch alloys, wrapped with 225/60 R18 rubbers, the set-up similar to the 2.0 Luxury.

Inside, you’ll find a 12.3-inch multi-info instrument TFT display screen and an eight-inch Display Audio head unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto and a six-speaker audio system.

Standard kit also includes combination leather upholstery in black, ventilated/heated 12-way driver and four-way front passenger power adjustable seats, dual-zone air-conditioning, a Qi wireless device charger, a 10.5-inch colour head-up display, five USB-C ports (two for charging and one for data in front, and two for charging for the rear seats) and a digital rear view mirror.

As for safety and driving assistance systems, the Harrier 2.5 HEV is equipped with seven airbags (driver, front passenger, side, curtain and driver’s knee) and a Toyota Safety Sense suite that includes a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control, adaptive high beam and road sign assist. Additionally, there’s a blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, vehicle approach notice, a parking support brake feature and a panoramic view monitor, among others.

Exterior colours offered for the Harrier 2.5 HEV in Malaysia include Platinum White Pearl Mica, Precious Black and Grey Metallic, where the first two colour choices command an RM800 premium. The SUV is covered by a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, and an eight-year, unlimited mileage hybrid components warranty that covers the hybrid battery, inverter and power management ECU.

nearly RM300k car, the infotainment screen looks very cheaper than kids IPAD.

With that kind of price, only to get 8 inch infotainment display. Cheaper cars get bigger display. Toyota malaysia always fails on this part.

Is it so expensive to change to a bigger display car player

    Already RM290,000 car…
Give lar the nicer wide-screen infotainment system.
    Even it cost extra RM10-20k.
super outdated corrolla cross interior lmaoo yucks

    Screen from 2020? Stingy.

Check MYR to JPY currency for both period in 2020 May and now 1 RM to 40 JPY, but still selling much expensive than 5 years ago when ringgit appreciate against USD or JPY
This makes the Mazda CX-80 worth every penny.

At RM289k you will get 8 inch audio display with frame thicker than your family potrait wood frame on the wall.

Although the ringgit is strong, the cost of imported goods has increased. PMX is the best finance minister.

Hai Yoh ! Best 2020 technology. I will be cancelling my Zeekr 7x booking.

this is definately not a toyota, selling way too cheap in this segment, should sell 350k myr and above.

In 2026, we spent nearly 300k on an eight-inch Display Audio head unit featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, with sound delivered through a six-speaker system.

    Bravo Toyota Malaysia!
    Bravo to Sime Darby Berhad!
    Bravo to UMW Holdings Berhad!.

silly little center console unit + 6 speakers for a rm289k car. umwt can never get the specifications right (which is so sad).

God Damn, this is such an old model, with such an old screen, its criminal to ask for such money with such dated interior. That screen is ugly and so much panels..

Those performance figures, that price and those parts from the Toyota 2005 parts bin. Scandalous.

Those who must have a Toyota at this budget better get a Camry instead & save tens of thousands while looking classier.

…when it comes to trend setting. Bigger bezel and smaller screens are all the rage right now. I am surprised they didn’t make it even tinier.

the screen’s bezel is like those found in year 2000…did they use the wrong stock for a 289k car in 2026?

The sound system is a big letdown for a vehicle costing close to 300k

      that’s when iPhone 11-12/Galaxy S20 launched
so suddenly some traditional brand want to sell the iPhone 11/S20 now?

in tech world, we dont call it flagship killer,
but maybe they try to call it Air, FE, SE edition while trying to get it relevantly linked to traditional series name.

it’s just a repackaged product to suit series for targetted price selling.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 12
      • Each individual have their own taste. Actually both C9 hybrid and harrier hybrid are good and have advantages. If want reliability and enough power, Harrier hybrid better, If want sporty and more like supercar, Omada C9 better. Anyways, both C9 and Harrier are safer cars to drive

To me this 8 inch display is a deal breaker for the amount you are paying for this car. And the bezels look cheap and gaudy ! Toyota can do better than this.

This would have made sense if they brought it out the same time or one year after the XU80 Harrier debuted here. If buying today, just go for the new Camry Hybrid instead. Yes, Thai CBU not quite up there with Jap CBU, but it’s not that far behind and is still better built than 99% of CKD or China CBU cars sold here.

Buying this very nice Harrier is like eating a more expensive CKT in an air cond franchised restaurant vs a having a good CKT in corner food court one street away for RM9. Experience is different but worth the money or not you have to decide.

Emas PHEV is a good choice especially if 80% of your daily travel is 70km or less and charge it at home for RM0.57 per kwh.
