Penang is aiming for 600 EV charging bays in the state by 2030, up from 200-300 currently, according to a report by the Malay Mail. Looks like the target has been pushed forward by five years – it was reported only last year that 600 by end-2025 was the goal.
“The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is rolling out EV charging stations around the city, but only in the few hundreds, not into the thousands yet,” Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow was quoted as saying on the sidelines of the Penang Autoshow 2026.
He added that public buildings and shopping centres are converting some parking bays into EV charging bays. “However, for residential buildings, such as apartments and condominiums, there are safety issues to consider,” he said.
Chow said in his speech that EV adoption in Malaysia must move in tandem with industry participation, technological readiness and policy alignment. “EV sales more than doubled to over 30,000 units in 2025, reflecting strong year-on-year growth, though still representing a small share of total vehicle sales,” he said.

600 EV chargers in the state only? How to support large scale transition to EV cars? Just do simple maths…how many petrol pumps are there in the state against estimated number of cars in Malaysia?
EVs are usually driven by civilized folks, and penang is the most cultured state in malaysia
penang should consider self governing, collecting and spending tax money within their own state, same goes to johor and borneo states, leave other racist states to rot on their own
