Malaysians with valid foreign driving licence may apply to convert to Malaysian licence from June 1

Malaysians holding foreign driving licences with no restrictions will be allowed to apply for conversion to Malaysian driving licences from June 1, 2026, reported Bernama.

Applications for the licence conversion can be made at all road transport department (JPJ) offices nationwide, according to the transport ministry. “The move is in line with current developments and aims to ensure the mobility of Malaysians working, residing or managing affairs abroad is not disrupted,” the ministry said.

Under current policy, conversion of foreign licences is limited to Malaysians who obtained their foreign licence before Malaysian licence, participants of the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, and members of the diplomatic corps, according to the report.

In May last year, the road transport department (JPJ) stopped the conversion of foreign licences to Malaysian licences as part of the government’s efforts to improve road safety, strengthen governance and raise the quality of public service delivery.

The improved procedures are intended to ensure compliance with existing regulations while maintaining driving standards among applicants, according to the report.

“It is also aimed at facilitating applications for the conversion of foreign driving licences to Malaysian licences by taking into account current needs and the mobility of Malaysians, especially amid the current challenging global and domestic economic environment,” the ministry said. Information on application requirements, procedures and fees will be available on the JPJ website from June 1, it said.
