The road transport department (JPJ) has released its latest vehicle registration data for the month ending April 2026, with Perodua once again being on top. With 32,065 units registered last month, Perodua is back to scoring over 30,000 units and becomes the first car brand to cross the 100,000-unit mark this year with a year-to-date (YTD) total of 106,298 units.

Meanwhile, Proton continues to occupy the second spot with 17,980 units to bring its YTD tally up to 66,420 units. Toyota also keeps its position in third with 9,055 units, its highest single-month result so far this year (this figure also includes recon units) for a YTD total of 31,254 units.

Outside the top three is Honda in fourth with 3,969 units, which is down from the significant 7,053 units in March. April’s result is still better compared to the first two months of 2026, and the big H is currently the final brand on the list to hit a five-digit YTD tally at 17,566 units.

In fifth, we have Omoda | Jaecoo with 1,590 units, its best result so far this year for a YTD total of 5,215 units. Not too far behind is Mitsubishi, which saw strong deliveries of the new Xforce bump it up to sixth with 1,576 units, which is 1.6 times more than in March for a YTD total of 4,637 units.

Mitsubishi’s gain comes at the expense of Mazda, which dropped to seventh with its best single-month result so far at 1,428 units (3,767 YTD). BYD’s 1,413 units is also its highest this year and brings its YTD total to 3,674 units.

Another brand that did well for itself in April is Jetour, which recorded four-digit registrations for the first time this year at 1,197 units (2,877 YTD). Completing the top ten but not crossing the 1,000-unit mark is Mercedes-Benz with 891 units (2,952 YTD). Chery is close to the German brand in 11th with 891 units (3,936 YTD).

The gap between 11th and 12th is a few hundred units, with the latter occupied by Lexus with 586 units (1,928 YTD). Also in the 500-unit range are Great Wall Motor in 13th with 562 units (1.856 YTD), iCaur in 14th with 547 units (1,549 YTD), BMW in 15th with 516 units (2,182 YTD) and Isuzu in 16th with 510 units (1,570 YTD).

As for the remaining four brands in the top 20 list, Nissan took the 17th spot with 388 units (1,548 YTD), while Zeekr bounced back from the 177 units recorded in March to 357 units in April to secure 18th and a YTD total of 1,214 units). MINI made an appearance in the top 20 list last month by taking 19th place with 206 units (606 YTD), while Ford rounds things off in 20th with 189 units (1,062 YTD).

Honestly, so many powerful and modern C-segment powerful and sporty SUVs are hitting the road now.

We Malaysians definitely deserve a better driving experience! Even Indonesia just stepped up last week, aiming for 200,000 EVs to deal with the fuel crisis and the constant price hikes caused by the whole Israel-US-Iran mess.

We must not fall behind Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines in acquiring the desirable modern cars that Europeans are getting, too

Proton and Perodua sales will increase further come July once the new MITI policy kicks in. Good job Johari for protecting our local brands. Finally a competent and sensible leader in MITI.
