The road transport department (JPJ) has been posting public reminders on various topics on its social media pages for a while now, including how to properly navigate roundabouts and the usage of hazard lights.
Now, the department is focusing on the white lines you find as you come up to a traffic light. The reminder is a simple one: stop before the white line. In its posting, the department said that the white lines aren’t just markings on the road, but is meant to form a safety boundary to protect all road users.
This shouldn’t be that difficult but there are still instances where drivers fail to stop before the white line and overshoot it by quite some distance. Did you know that doing so is an offence? As previously reported, motorists who stop their vehicles beyond the white line at traffic lights may face a fine of RM2,000 or a jail term of six months.
Back in August 2023, the police conducted the nationwide ‘Ops Garisan Putih’ to catch motorists committing the act. Under Rule 38 of the Road Traffic Rules (LN166/1959), a motorist must not cause the vehicle or any part of the vehicle to stop in the crossing area unless he is prevented from moving by circumstances beyond his control or if he must stop to avoid an accident.
Being overly cautious and stopping your vehicle too far away from the white line isn’t wrong but drivers that do so are unknowingly evading the inductive loop detector that is located beneath the road surface. These detectors, which you may have seen as dark lines on the road, are meant to trigger a different traffic light cycle to let traffic through when a vehicle is above them. So, follow the Goldilocks principle of not being too far away or overshooting, but right in place just behind the line.
while list this is a good advise, where is the enforcement against those fella who car/motorcyle modified with offroad yellow lights. Already there are a lot white LED white lights that is brightness lumen beyond the needs of city drive use, allowing these sort of lights on the road is blinding and not helping others users that are using the same road.
Yes exactly… I see NO enforcement at all…. This type of driving really frustrating for me and when people are killed on the road it’s treated as normal… Got to be the worst road death statistics in the world …
Yes. Crossing white line is with punishable. Dark tint, driving with children behind the steering wheel and bike without helmet at kampung buat2 tak nampak.
dun forget the grab panda lalamove riders, rempit in disguise, always against rules and endanger everyone; you hon dia sebab dia lawan arus, dia hon you balik siap bagi stare kok.

Crossing 6 inches of the white line(RM2K fine) or running a red light(RM300 fine)?The fines should be higher for running red lights.

Hello..pensionable JPJ dudes…focus on the more dangerous offenses…reckless driving,speeding past red lights,dadah/drunk driving,helmetless riders,rempits,lajaks,without road tax, banned modifications,totally dark tinted alphards,overloaded unta lorries.

so it means, if you’ve accidentally crossed the white line, might as well run the red lights. the fine is less only RM300 compared to stopping safely but crossed the line which is RM2000. who made these laws anyway?

they wont since most of the youngsters in jpj also rempit and can dodge summon easily..still salty cause my r1m got summoned for excessive noise and i found out the jpj that summon me ride a y15 without a tail and super loud exhaust
I think they should catch people that are running red lights first before catching people that overshoot the line by a bit.
Selective enforcement as usual. Important offenses buat tatau, minor issues saja penting or easy to saman while mat moto escape.

let me guess, this does not apply to motorcyclist. prove me wrong, except at roadblocks the police enforcements tends to target cars instead of motorcyclist if you notice it.
Many motorcyclists do this at traffic light, obstructing lanes for their own convenience so that they can zoom fast.

Sometimes the green light blinks and sometihlmes it turns orange without blinking for 2 seconds before red. can do emergency stop . But not sure if can stop behind lines.

There needs to be a lot more driver and road safety campaigns in Malaysia… People’s driving culture is really bad… Speed, no signals, not giving way at roundabouts, no seatbelt, kids not in child seat, motorcycle no helmet…. Parking anywhere, on corners…. And many more…
HELLO ! Focus your resources on dangerous driving la first. Reckless, tailgating, langgar lampu merah, drunk driving, driving against traffic etc etc especially for motobike… Just a little bit of the line dah macam VAR world cup, punishment like cancel goal and penalty. CRAZY !

Well its good news to be strict , I recently moved to Penang from overseas and amazed with the violations that bikers does, they still ride through red light, and ride over incoming traffic etc. I stopped riding bike because of my safety concerns.You can see it daily by Sungai Pinang traffic light, Perak road traffic light. I hope authorities will take action against violators and to make road safe for public.

Riding through red lights , riding on opposite incoming traffic, etc. You can see these kind of reckless act by P.Ramlee road traffic light, Perak road traffic light, Jelutong traffic light etc. I hope authorities will take action and make road safe again.
Why don’t the authorities ensure that another road sensor lines are also put 10 feet before the line so that the over cautious drivers are able to trigger the sensor.
Also, in JB, there is a red zone just beyond the while lines with Motorcycle pics allowing Motorcycles to wait in that zone?

I recently came back from over seas after 20 yearsand unfortunately the bikers in Penang are the worse offenders. Running red light and riding against incoming traffic is normal here. I used bike because of the traffic but I stopped because of my safety concern. I hope the authorities will fine the offenders, if no it will be not safe for anyone to go on the road. We are developing nation and not third world country anymore. Please look into this matter
