Chinese cars should not be let into the US – Ford CEO

That’s quite an about-turn for someone who’s said good things about Chinese cars in the past, including a Xiaomi SU7 which he daily-drove for half a year, but we guess reality has hit hard. Ford CEO Jim Farley has said in a Fox News interview that Chinese carmakers would devastate US manufacturing if allowed into the market.

“We should not let them into our country. Manufacturing is the heart and soul of our country and for us to lose that to those exports would be devastating for our country. That doesn’t even include the cyber and privacy risks of a Chinese vehicle. All the vehicles have 10 cameras, they can collect a lot of data. There’s no way this is a fair fight.

Chinese cars should not be let into the US – Ford CEO

“Ford has to do our part to make our vehicles competitive with the Chinese – and I think we have with our new affordable EVs coming out, made in Kentucky – but this is not a fair fight, and it should have a big impact on the US,” he said.

Although Chinese cars currently face a 100% import tariff in the US, they’re closer than ever to the border – Mexico and Canada allow them, where they’ve been gaining ground. Recently, three Democratic senators urged US president Donald Trump to bar Chinese carmakers from building cars in the US and to stop Chinese cars assembled in Mexico or Canada from entering the country.

  • you must not reject competition, business world is never a fair playground, may be ford can gain something with competition. look at honda malaysia, they adjusted their offers by downgrading their more technologically advanced lane watch in preference of 360 camera to match their lowly chinese counterparts

Hiya learn from us la create cronies suppliers and give people low quality products and then slap 300% tariff/tax and also introduce APs and tells grandfather stories like to ensure EVs sold has safety and then jobs done.

Fortunate or unfortunate, kita ada sampai P2 aja.
Americans always refer their automotive companies as “big three” (Ford, GM, Stelantis Murica), and they are *much* bigger than our two.
The “tongkat” over there is much thicker, even more length than the copium syringe scuderia fans take. But unlike us, they are capable of producing muscle cars with their own cultural identity.

He known how good the Chinese EVs are and he know that none of US carmakers can compete with Chinese brands in any form. His daily drive is imported Xiaomi SU7 and he describe how great it is. He is not hesitate to give high praise but again he know if Chinese EV go into US market it is disaster for local car brands. It is bad to ban Chinese car into US market but no choice otherwise hundreds thousand of jobs lost or decrease on income. Chinese had the lowest ever supply chain cost, no one can beat them and even get close to them. They utilise their ultra high volume in China market and pressure suppliers to give them lowest price for component to build the car. For the sake of protecting their industry Ford CEO has to urge US to ban Chinese car.

‘Manufacturing is the heart n soul of our country’…why is that some components on your own car have ‘Made in China’ words?
Also, how many big US brand has shifted to China to manufacture their goods like tools….
Lets dont go into the cyber risk and privacy…..its devastating.

Westerners just have to admit that they are not as business savvy and intelligent as the Asians and that’s why they cannot compete. The west have been feeling the threat of rapid economic growth among Asian countries.

Likewise US cars should not be sold in China. Those cars have cameras too and pose a security risk to China. In the end, everyone should just boycott one another and depend on yourselves. Close all borders, live like a hermit and let’s see how the world is 20 years later

US is afraid of competition, also GM, Ford, Chevrolet, Tesla all crony owned. Same as MITI here, afraid of foreign EV brands just to protect their cronies.

Thumb up 10 Thumb down 1
    • All true except for Tesla. The big Detroit cronies tried their best to destroy Tesla but Tesla just out innovated them all including the PRC. Not one PRC brand can come close to the efficiency of Tesla’s EV motors. Their efficiency is legendary. You can praise cheap prices all you want but Tesla is pure creme la creme of EV makers and now beats every auto company on pure merit. They don’t need any subsidies. You don’t like Elon Musk that’s the problem learn to separate your lame political beliefs and look at Tesla’s technology for what it is.

Model Y owner here, Teslas are efficient and they are well run and profitable but let’s not kid ourselves, they enjoyed $3.16b + $440m in loans from the US government throughout their history (subsidy tracker). Bloomberg puts BYD subsidies at $3.7b.

Every car manufacturer enjoys (current, not past) subsidies, Japanese, Korean, American, European, and yes, Chinese too

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
        • Yawn “bloomberg”, I’ll rather trust the random noise coming from my bottom orifice when I pass wind. Bloomberg spin on what is essentially tax cuts which pretty much every big American firm gets, even foreign firms get more than American firms case in point Samsung FABs in Texas.

Tax cuts != subsidies, no money given back to the firm, no bail outs but the big Detroit cronies have gotten bailout money in the past when things were bad now that is definitely a subsidy to the firms.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0
      • Many buyers like buttons and bling bling. What they dont understand a tesla u buy today will still have backward compatibility in term of software 5 or 8 years down the road.

Try those china ev, you will be lucky to even get OTA once a year what’s more with new iteration churning out every year, earlier model will be forgotten. The closest competition from China EV is Xpeng as they tend to copy whatever tesla is doing.

The other thing, all tesla car already have the hardware to support FSD. Again, not many current chinese ev have such full capability in malaysia.

Last thing is safety, Tesla cars are build with giga casting which have a pretty strong chasis and score good result in Euro Ncap. Chinese ev, only a few (Xpeng, Zeekr, Xiaomi) adopted the giga casting which was pioneered by Tesla.

So there you go, compare a tesla rahmah at rm145k, which other car offer a FSD capable car with great efficiency, continuous OTA updates and safety build into such price bracket.

During the 1970’s, Chrysler, Ford & GM had also complained about increased competition from the Japanese auto brands. But the difference now is that US consumers are having difficulty to afford US brand models.

Our excise duty on imported car brands is actually a tariff by another name. It is a protectionist policy.

The West used to colonise, rape and plunder. They can’t do that anymore.

Now they resort to hobbling the competition with tariffs, sanctions and outright brand. If you are nice, others will reciprocate, but if you behave badly, others shall retaliate.
