Following the announcement in July this year that Ford and Geely have formed a joint venture in Spain for localised production at the former’s Valencia plant, Automotive News now reports that Ford will use Geely’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform for a new SUV slated for European markets.
This was confirmed by the new chairman of Geely Automobile Holdings (Geely Auto), An Conghui, during a company earnings call recently. However, while the base is the GEA, the multi-powertrain SUV will have a rally-bred design and driving dynamics evoking the Ford’s racing heritage.
As per an earlier release, Ford’s JV with Geely will officially begin operations in the first half of 2027, with the first new vehicles expected to roll off the line in 2028. Within the JV, Geely owns a 34% stake, while the remaining 66% is Ford’s.
In addition to Ford, Geely also has a partnership with Renault that includes the Horse Powertrain joint venture, a 34% stake in Renault Korea Motors as well as a strategic stake in the French carmaker’s Brazilian production site, the last of which will also see Renault use Geely’s GEA for its vehicles.
