On October 12, Chery Auto Malaysia released an official statement indicating that it had begun a recall campaign for the Chery Omoda 5 following the road transport department’s (JPJ) temporary suspension of the vehicle’s type approval (VTA) after an incident where a rear axle detached from an example of the SUV.
Now, the company has announced new details about the recall campaign, indicating that it covers a total of 8,878 Omoda 5 vehicles (both C & H variants). It said it has identified the affected vehicles and will proactively contact the respective owners.
The company said that all vehicles included in the campaign are eligible for a complimentary inspection and replacement at any authorised Chery service centre nationwide. It added that it is making an effort to expedite the delivery of replacement components, and said that the first shipment has been dispatched and will be delivered to service centres in stages.

To ensure that every measure taken is based on investigation findings, aligned with the road transport department (JPJ), and designed to safeguard our customers’ interests while providing a solution. We would like to outline the following arrangements for this recall campaign.
The recall campaign covers a total of 8,878 Omoda 5 vehicles (both C & H variants). All vehicles included in the campaign are eligible for a complimentary inspection and replacement at any authorised Chery service centre nationwide.
We are making every effort to expedite the delivery of replacement components. The first shipment has been dispatched and will be delivered to service centres in stages.
To provide a smoother experience for customers and ensure the orderly implementation of the recall campaign, Chery Auto Malaysia has identified the affected vehicles and will proactively contact the respective owners.
In the meantime, vehicle owners may verify whether their vehicle is included in the campaign by checking their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the Chery Malaysia website.

This is not the first recall for the SUV or the component in question. To recap, in 2024, an Omoda 5’s rear axle detached on the move, and Chery Malaysia recalled 600 units even before JPJ issued its statement.
Back then, the carmaker said that a miscalibrated welding tip was the root cause and that it found 60 units produced on August 15, 2023 to have the affected parts. Just a week later, axle replacement appointments had been made with all 60 of those owners, and the case was declared closed in June 2024, which was about three months from start to finish.
It is worth noting that the Omoda 5 in question is a discontinued model that was replaced in September 2025 by the Chery O5. The facelifted model has a multi-link rear suspension as opposed to the pre-facelift Omoda 5’s torsion beam.

So,another 8877 Omodas are happily on our roads until deaths start or paralysis of drivers occur due to smash ups.
Why must auto journalists like BoBo Berak keep raising this issue,and Chery maintain news blackout,until JPJ steps in?

In a situation like this, is very important to be clear and provide enough info of what is the cause and fix, to help regain some public confidence that they are on top of things. Being up front and clear also give them a chance to control the narrative, rather then letting internet create its own story about the possible causes.
This recall is dealing with the whole iceberg, not the tip of the iceberg. Very comprehensive recall and should erase all chances of future similar incidents.

So what components exactly affected and why?
From a manufacturing quality standpoint:
1. was d recent unit one of d 600 units checked back in 2024?
2. if d recent unit was not amongst d 600 units recalled previously for inspection, how was it decided that d rest were safe?
Omoda 5 CKD now stopped,
maybe could extend warranty 10 years for the rear axle till 2036, include up to 2023 CKD registered.
Chery China has been serious for Quality,
out of million kena this, Malaysia’s branch management should level up thier management quality.
Same issue recall but different units quantity..so before this they didnt even study root cause deep enough for this to happened again
because between the last recall in 2024 till today thousands more units had been sold

chery need to understand they are a chinese brand unlike the japs, there’s very little brand loyalty right now for them to squander like this, when you lose a customer you lost them for good.
Many owners already listed their O5 to sell away, used price for 2 years old car dropped almost 50%
My parents told me not to buy a Fiat at any cost because they are rust buckets in the 60s and 70s, even though rust problems were largely solved by the 80s.
I have not considered any Fiat because of that, not that they were widely available but the point is bad reputations stay
If not because of the latest incident, this “total” recall would probably did not happen. Ticking time bomb waiting to happen.
