SPIED: 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport first sightings

Spy-Shots of Cars

The next-generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has been spotted on the move testing for the first time. Our spy photographers have managed to bag a number of shots of the Mitsubishi Triton-based SUV that will, most likely, debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September before going on sale early 2016.

With the amount of camouflage present on this mule, it’s still rather difficult to form any conclusions regarding the final outcomes of its looks. However, peering beneath the black duct tape reveals a front grille design that is similar to the one found on the recently-launched, fifth-generation Triton.

Elsewhere, the new Pajero Sport is set to ditch its ungainly, boxy profile for a sleeker silhouette thanks to a sloping roofline and rounded tail. While no photos of the interior exists (yet), Mitsubishi is adamant that the new model will boast a more premium cabin in terms of its layout and materials employed.

Under the bonnet, expect mechanicals to be carried over from Triton – that means a 2.4 litre petrol and a 2.4 litre diesel as well as the new 2.4 litre MIVEC VGT turbodiesel mill (as mirrored on the Triton in Thailand). Rumours of a plug-in hybrid system are circulating with the new Pajero Sport said to have its eco-friendly powertrain carried over from the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Not to be confused with the CBU-from-Japan Mitsubishi Pajero – itself on sale in Malaysia – the new Pajero Sport will be, as mentioned, based on the Triton pick-up truck. Assembly of the new model will take place at the new Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Indonesia facility in Indonesia.

Crossover? Are you sure that it’ll be a crossover? If it’s based on the Triton, it definitely will not be a crossover because of the former’s ladder frame chassis.

Mitsubishi, please differentiate the styling more between the pickup and SUV. Current model looks exactly the same as the pickup from the front. Buyers paying extra 80k for the Pajero Sport would like to have a more ‘expensive’ exterior and cabin compared to the cheaper Triton.
