Sepang International Circuit to be open to cyclists

Yes, you read the title right. The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will soon witness cyclists pound their way around the 5.543 km racetrack. For those living under a rock, SIC has played host to various notable motor racing events such as the Formula 1 Malaysia Grand Prix and the MotoGP Malaysia race.

A part of an initiative to highlight the importance of physical fitness, the circuit is expected to open its door to cyclists from the Klang Valley as well as the central region of the peninsular. Offering an “unrivalled” experience, cyclists will be able to lap their way round, covering all 15 corners and eight straights – including the high-speed back and main straights.

“Cycling on the track is actually an activity that we at SIC do regularly amongst ourselves when there’s no event at the track. We hope to share this unique experience with other cyclists as well… But our challenge has always been that the track is always fully booked. However, at the beginning of this year, we aimed to slot special sessions for cyclists,” said SIC CEO, Datuk Razlan Razali.

Apparently, this isn’t the first time that the circuit has seen cyclists tracking their way through as competitive cycling events have been held there in the past. The new concept, however, aims to adopt a more relaxed and casual nature. Interested parties can keep track of the soon-to-be-announced cycling sessions on SIC’s Facebook and Twitter page.
