Gov’t considering reducing Budi95 quota to 150L, 60% of Malaysians use less RON95 than that – deputy FM

Faced with high oil prices and an increasingly heavy fuel subsidy burden, the Malaysian government is considering a further reduction of the monthly quota for subsidised RON 95 petrol under the Budi Madani RON 95 programme.

UPDATE: Deputy finance minister Liew Chin Tong said his speech was taken out of context and has released an official statement on the matter.

Budi95 started off with 300 litres a month for all Malaysians last year, before the quota was reduced to 200 litres per month in March. Now, we could potentially see a monthly cap of 150 litres as part of broader government efforts to better manage fuel supply, improve subsidy efficiency and reduce leakage.

Deputy finance minister Liew Chin Tong said the proposed adjustment is based on consumption data, which shows that a majority of Malaysians use significantly less than the current subsidised threshold, New Straits Times reported.

“The data consistently show that 80% of Malaysians use less than 200 litres. The next step is 150 litres [as] 60% of the population uses less than 150 litres,” he said at the Affin Market Outlook 2026: Propelling Malaysia Forward event in KL today.

On March 26, prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the temporary reduction of Budi95 quota to 200 litres a month effective April 1, at the same subsidised rate of RM1.99 per litre. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said that 90% of RON 95 petrol users will not be affected by the reduced quota.

First stage, make the choices of affordable EV out of reach from most of Malaysian.

Second stage, reduce the Budi95 quota again to 150l/month.

    Next stage?

  • if this is executed, I believed it is way more preferred than T20 disqualified from entitlement of Budi95

With the existing Budi system that is already implemented, just add 1 more tier in between..

    First 100L: RM1.99
    Second 100L: RM2.5 or RM3.0
More than 200L follow market rate

    Reward those who use less.

    Well-loved. Thumb up 92 Thumb down 6
    • i guess this is fairer than completely cancel t20 subsidy.

Many T20 don’t mind being reduced subsidy but not complete wipe out. Anwar missed the chance to increase price in 2025 instead he reduce fuel price from 2.05 to 1.99. The fuel price was high in 2025 yet he did something strange. At that time he should raise the fuel price to RM2.30 at least. If fuel price is RM2.30 until this year fuel crisis then gov raise the fuel price to RM2.50 and limit the Budi95 to 300L I guess many rakyat although don’t like but willing to accept it.

I don’t know why this gov such bad luck facing high fuel price, racism issue (akmal on KK mart etc), education (more suicide or school murdering cases). Pls do something is right and fxcking obvious to public can see and feel it. I predict more and more people will switch to opposition in next GE.

Thumb up 10 Thumb down 6
    • Yes, this is much better.
Not controlling movement, not locked down.

      WFH also encouraged.

Quota 100 liter for next month better; enough fuel stock at depot? Already substitute with Russia (60 milion barrel per month) & Australia oil?

Just use the PADU to target the rich and super rich.
If u can execute target diesel subsidies, why cant expand it to Ron 95?
Can u imagine Tan Sri and Datuk and Datin so n so and the rich ,enjoying Ron 95 subsidies, even cap at 200 litres, wont hurt their deep pockets, even pumping at RM3.50/litre.
Just dont touch the B40 and M40..many ,whom have been degraded to senior B40 now.
And PMX,pls chop 5 billion Rm from the worst performing kementerian..the Education budget..with super alarming levels of rapes, murders, bullying, gangsterism ,we haven’t seen until now.

I just wonder if no one utilize 200L what is the purpose reduce to 150L. Does this help government save the money? The subsidy only pay when someone use it right?

Kalau mansuhkan elaun petrol menteri, MP, ADUN, dan pegawai tinggi kerajaan, boleh jimat brapa bilion RM setahun? Saya ulang,

  • First they introduce Budi95 quota 300L per month and I did not speak out as I don’t use much and only to work.

Then they reduce Budi95 quota to 200L per month and I did not speak out as I use less than 200L per month.

They they reduce Budi95 quota to 150L per month and I did not speak out as I still use less than 150L per month.

Then they reduce Budi95 quota to 100L and it start to impact me directly but they was no one left to speak out for me.

Gov reduce Budi95 quota but no improvement in public transport or EV adoption or EV price(recent MITI rules to protect Proton make this worse) or WFH arrangement.

Gov wants to reduce fuel subsidies so got more budget for their cronies projects, Gov also won’t reduce subsidies for the top household income as it directly affect their cronies and to some extent their voter base.

    EV la wei

In time of oil crisis. Make EV affordable to all. Let the public chargers easier to install.

So the subsidy will drastically drop. Then no need with this BS move.

Why la the whole of cabinet listen to MITI officers and their incompetent Minister and Deputy Minister.

    EV & Solar. Reduce bureaucracy.
